Temperature
The average annual temperature is above 0° C because of the nearby oceans. But the warmer parts of the temperate rainforests have the average temperatures that are around 20° C. It is a very lush and wet place.
Precipitation
In the temperate rainforests it rains up to 100 inches per year. Then more moisture comes from the fog that hovers above the trees.Unlike tropical rainforests, which are warm and moist, temperate rainforests are cool, but also have moderate temperatures.
Climate
The temperate rainforest had mild, wet winters and cool, foggy, or very cloudy summers. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, but Summers go above 80 degress. From the hot humid summers plants get water from the humidity of the summer's and grow from that.
Sunlight
The temperate rainforest does not recieve a lot of sunlight, Which affects the plants and their growth and the way they reproduce. Plants in the temperate rain forest manage however to live by all of the rainfall in the rainforest.
Water
Temperate rain forests are moist and lush. The moist air from the Pacific Ocean condenses after it is trapped by the coastal mountain ranges and falls as rain. Rainfall averages 60 to 200 inches per year. Rain forests in the northernmost areas can receive some ice and snow.
Cloud Cover
The climate is foggy and cloud-covered. It remains cloudy and foggy even during the dry season. In the summer, fog provides about 7 to 12 inches of rain per year. This contributes to the lush, temperate environment.
Soil
The soil is nutrient-rich because there are large amounts of decaying, organic matter. This organic matter, from leaves, dead vegetation and insects, is consumed by mushrooms, fungi, bacteria and insects. The lush soil combined with high precipitation allows the trees to grow very tall. The coastal redwood, for example, grows in temperate rain forests in California.
Light
Much of the sunlight is blocked by the frequent clouds and fog. Even when the sky is clear, the tall canopy of the rain forest blocks much of the sunlight from reaching the forest floor. This factor, combined with the high precipitation, creates a dark and humid forest floor. Insects, mushrooms and fungi thrive in the temperate rain forests.
